Secure online password saver
October 4, 2007, 9:27 amEver need a password for one of the numerous websites you use but keep forgetting it? Try
KeyShelter today.
Keyshelter allows for the safe and secure storage of passwords or other sensitive information online through a simple web browser. All too often I need some website password and I'm offsite. Often times I'm not using my own laptop so I don't have the convenience of using a VPN to get to my desktop machine for my stored passwords there. Now with a simple webpage I can retrieve this info quickly and easily.
KeyShelter only stores encrypted data on the user level - not on the server level. The browser encrypts and decrypts so no password is ever sent, received, or stored, in cleartext. As it uses the power of AES your info is quite secure. Put simply, if you forget your decryption key the information will be lost for good.
Originally created for our own purposes, we soon realized how handy this service actually is. While it wasn't a taxing challenge, it was still fun to develop. It allowed some real testing of just how powerful JavaScript has become in web browsers.
It's a free utility and service.
KeyShelter.comThe next step in the development will be a firefox plugin to automate password retrieval without having to visit the website. AES secured, local user level passwords retrieved from any computer would make my browsing life a little easier.
